Howdy! My screenplay takes place in rural North Dakota in November 1996, and two teenage characters are fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I know the bat'leth as a weapon was introduced in the show long ago, but when did replicas and toys become widely sold? Would it be realistic for a working-class young woman to have a mini bat'leth she could use as a knife in that year? I also read that the mek'leth (smaller Klingon scimitar) was introduced in DS9 and also appeared in First Contact. How early were replicas of those available to fans?
Thanks a million to you all! Would also love to hear any other miscellaneous stories or details of the TNG+DS9 fandom of the 90s, to give some extra oomph and care to an underrepresented community :)

There's a superstition in Japan that certain ages are unlucky. The year you turn 36 is unlucky for women. (There are only two options.) I turned 36 in 2025 and it was a bad year for me!

… which is why I'm starting with this selfie:

My resolution this year [2025] is that I’m going to play more. The goal is to do or say one goofy or silly or flirty or ridiculous thing every day. Play is good for the brain and helps our nervous system experience safety.

I may not have done or said playful things *every* day, but I have done them enough that I no longer feel as awkward trying to have fun with folks. So that’s kinda cool. I don’t know that I experienced safety in general but I definitely experienced safety with the double handful of people with whom I was allowed to be silly and they would be silly in return.

I miss my meatspace people. So many of my japes and silliness are physical, and I’m only just now realizing how tactile I am in my play, nose boops, scratching at doors like a cat instead of knocking, tugging at the elbows of people’s clothes, etc..

<.< … >.> … *boops your nose*

Went out for breakfast, I had a green chile, mushroom and jack cheese omelet and a biscuit. I would have had an orange and pecan muffin but the waitress didn't bother telling me they had those. Bought a new calendar and some fancy soaps.

We were surprised to see the heron out on the ice last week, since we had thought it migrated each year. But apparently it's not unusual for them to stay put. It was not having the easiest time on the ice though, as up top it had nearly fallen over while trying to walk.

Resolutions: I can’t remember if I resolved any of this last year, but:

• I’m going to try the new fruits and vegetables that I come across. I crave variety, and I need to get more fiber in my diet. It’s also an easy win, and I need some of those right now.

• I aim to knit three to four Hexipuffs a week. that will get me to just about done with the couch blanket by the end of the year, since I’m at ~160, and I want 200 more to make a decently sized blanket.

• I’m going to keep working on my shit, feeling my feelings, processing, and doing all the parts of growing that make you into a more functional person. I was going to do that anyway but see again: easy wins. I need a couple.

I may need to write this stuff down in the front of my new bullet journal/day planner. Or possibly write it on the cover in gold permanent marker - that might do it.

I should probably go check what I wrote in January of last year and see how I did, huh? Maybe I’ll hit that tonight or tomorrow.

Good luck this year, everyone, and I’ll see you in the streets.

It's the first Friday open thread of 2026. In customary fashion, I'm going to use the following prompt, which I feel is the right question with which to start a new year:

What are you planning to leave behind in 2025, and what are you planning to pick up and/or carry forward into 2026?

My answer )

On that rather fraught note, what about all of you? Do you have anything you want to leave behind, or carry with you?

The Deathless One

The Deathless One by Emma Hamm is $1.99! This came out in August and I mentioned it in Hide Your Wallet. I think I preordered this one. Did any of you pick this one up?

A princess murdered at the altar makes a deal with the god of death for vengeance and to save her people in this first in a unique romantasy trilogy from USA TODAY bestselling author Emma Hamm.

Jessamine was raised to be a leader for her people, but when the land is overrun by an incurable plague, she must enter a political marriage to save them all. A union that should have brought hope only brings death as her new husband murders her at the wedding altar and seizes the throne.

But her death is just the beginning. Her spirit is met by the Deathless One, a god of death yearning to return to the mortal plane, and he needs her help. The two of them make a deal—her life and the return of her kingdom in exchange for his resurrection. But the Deathless One is a known trickster, and a deal with him is one made in blood.

Jessamine knows the Deathless One is a dangerous ally, but the longer they work together, the more she wants him and the less she can stay away. As their connection deepens, soon she wonders if she even wants this contract to end. Perhaps the more appealing throne is the one by his side, but she’d have to turn her back on her people to get it.

Every Heart a Doorway

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is $2.99! I love this series. The writing is so beautiful and I would happily send 300+ pages in the world McGuire has created. However, I will warn that these books have a haunting sadness to them or can be downright horrific.

Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
No Solicitations
No Visitors
No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

No matter the cost.

Make It Sweet

Make It Sweet by Kristen Callihan is $1.99! This was mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet and said she was tempted by the blurb. I haven’t kept up with Callihan’s more current romances. What do you think of them?

From New York Times bestselling author Kristen Callihan comes a charming, emotional romance about redefining dreams and discovering unlikely love along the way.

Life for Emma isn’t good. The world knows her as Princess Anya on Dark Castle, but then her character gets the axe—literally. The cherry on top is finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman. She needs a break, and sanctuary comes in the form of Rosemont, a gorgeous estate in California promising rest and relaxation.

Then she meets the owner’s equally gorgeous grandson, ex–hockey player and current recluse Lucian Osmond, and she sees her own pain and yearning reflected in his eyes.

He’s charming when he wants to be but also secretive and gruff, with protective walls as thick as Emma’s own. Despite a growing attraction, they avoid each other.

But then there’s an impromptu nighttime skinny-dip, and Lucian’s luscious homemade tarts and cream cakes start arriving at Emma’s door, tempting her to taste life again…

In trying to stay apart, they only grow closer—and their broken pieces just might fit together and make them whole.

I thought about this one for a bit.   Some fics I did this past year and how I'd fix them.

I'm very proud of the Ten and Donna one I did, so let's move on.  The remix I did with Six and Peri... yeah even I admit it wasn't great.  I waited till the last minute and didn't completely get what a remix meant.  Also, I freely admit I barely edited.

And my fic with Lacey and Gold... another case of "waited till the last minute." :P  And with that, more barely editing and could've done better with plot.  (Though I'm still gonna submit it for the CCAs over on Tumblr)

<small>*CCAs- Chipped Cup Awards.  A OUAT Rumbelle Superlatives thing with categories like Best Fluff- Family, Best AU,  Best Short Fic, and you get the idea. :)

coxcomb

coxcomb (KOKS-kohm) - n., (usually spelled cockscomb) the fleshy red pate of a rooster; (hist.) the cap of a court jester, traditionally adorned with a red stripe; (arch.) the head, pate; (hist.) a conceited foolish man, especially one excessively concerned with his appearance and clothes, a fop.

(This doesn't quite fit this week's pattern of noun+noun words, what with genitive ending, but it wasn't actually a theme week anyway.) The jester's cap is, if it's not clear, the connection between a rooster's crown and a fop. The fool sense appeared while it still had the Middle English spelling cokkes comb, the respelling with x first appeared around 1570, and the fop sense showed up in the 17th century.

Fuck. CVS is out of COVID tests, but I picked up cough drops and loratidine, per [personal profile] rahaeli, on the assumption that this is covid; between the cough and the general sense of recognition, I am pretty confident in my self-diagnosis.

R. is shipping me tests and some other stuff, because she is a fucking saint. I am changing back into my jammies and finishing this pot of tea and going back to bed. Ugh.
