Finally home

I woke up this morning around 10:00, and puttered around [personal profile] mashfanficchick's apartment, trying to decide what to do.

RK messaged me at a little after 11:00 to say he'd bring my keys over in 10 or 15 minutes, so I waited for him til he called and said he was there when I went out and collected my keys.

I called [personal profile] mashfanficchick and asked zer if ze was coming home today, in which case I would wait for her, or not, in which case I would just go home. Ze said I should go home and we'd see each other tomorrow.

So I checked out things online, put my laptop away, took a shower, dressed (in the same clothes I wore yesterday so I didn't have to open my suitcase) and went down to the bank and Starbucks to have coffee and breakfast before I left.

I went to the bank and just when I was entering Starbucks my phone rang. It was the FWiB, because there was little chance of being able to Team tonight but he had a bit of time so he wanted to touch base, which was lovely.

So we talked outside Starbucks for awhile, and then I went in and got one of their new strata frappechinos and a breakfast sandwich and ate there. Then I went back to the apartment, got my stuff together, and got an Uber. The Uber took the most bizarre way to get to my place, but it got there, and I got home safely.

Oreo was glad to see me I think. He's been mostly pretty close to me since I got here. The turtle tank looks wonderful, but there is one problem. It's not squarely on the stand, it's hanging off about an inch and a half. Which I didn't notice til after I'd been here several hours.

First I put my laptop up, and then I took out the bag with the Olcott Christmas ornament that I got, and put it somewhere safe. I haven't quite dared to look and see if it got broken in transit yet, I will tonight.

I went through the accumulated mail, which someone, RK I assume, had brought in, nothing important. Except that the Old Guard graphic novel I ordered had arrived. So I took that to the bedroom and read it.

While I was laying in bed I started a Shipt order on my phone, and after I finished the graphic novel I came out and finished the Shipt order on the laptop.

And just as I typed the above lines, I got an email from the FWiB saying he was free and could Team, so we did. Very nice. But to continue what I was saying.

I waited for the Shipt order, and played Bookworm. Got up to level 14, pretty good. Just when I finished, my alarm went off and it was time to call Middle Brother. He is fine, nothing t0 report.

That was when I noticed the problem with the turtle tank. I called [personal profile] mashfanficchick and she said to call RK and tell him, cause there was no way the two of us could fix it on our own. But we did make plans for seeing each other tomorrow.

I called RK, and told him, and he's coming over tomorrow after work to do something which will probably require emptying the tank, moving it, and refilling it.

So I had dinner, and went and lay down and played solitaire, til pet feeding time, when I gave Oreo fresh water (cause he still has food leftover in his bowl from while I was away) and fed the turtle.

And then I started here, and then Teamed the FWiB, as I said.

So my vacation is over and I am home.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. RK.

3. [personal profile] mashfanficchick

4. My pets are fine.

5. My mail was safely inside.

6. Home safely.

It's a bunch of stuff I've written in Spanish and Japanese for practice. A lot of these are from the same set of questions where I alternated which language I answered in for each one, so they seem (and are!) interconnected -- but for ease of reading, I separated them by language rather than chronological order.

Semi-irrelevant, but concerning the title of this entry among other things: I know the difference in standard English between was and were. But I don't like it. My dialect barely ever using "were" just sounds better to me, so don't bother correcting me on this... or much else regarding English grammar, unless you're a genuine AAVE speaker and know for sure I made a mistake. You should totally correct my Spanish and Japanese though!

Octagonal structures, Wyre Forest, 10th August 2025
191/365: Industrial remnants, Wyre Forest
Click for a larger, sharper image

I had a quiet Sunday, which was fine by me, but I did go for a fairly long walk in the afternoon. This took me off the beaten track in the Wyre Forest -- although there were footpaths, I met one person (and his quiet dog) in at least half an hour, and this on a dry Sunday in August. Anyway, I went looking for structures I remembered from several years ago, and happily I found them. These are almost certainly relics of the once-significant charcoal burning industry in the forest, which survived into the early 20th century. The flat light makes it hard to see, but there's a second octagonal, brick-sided structure behind the main one. Perhaps they were part of small kilns, or perhaps they held pools to wash charcoal. I don't know.

But not home yet...

My alarm was set for 8:00 but I had some trouble getting up. I managed though eventually. Then had breakfast and coffee, showered and dressed, and finished getting things packed and the cottage ready for leaving.

Linda came to say goodbye, and I gave her the Cheerios. The cab got there early which was both good and bad. Good cause I didn't have to sit and worry, bad because I had to rush. It was the same cabbie as last time, and he remembered how to find me. That was good.

So because he was early I got to the train station very early, Nothing to do but wait. The train was a few minutes late, no big deal.

I got on and found a good seat, someone helped me get my suitcase in the luggage rack, and I settled in. Around Syracuse I made my way to the cafe car and once again had a stromboli and diet Coke. I called [personal profile] mashfanficchick.

Here I have to report that, in an amazing display of going above and beyond the call of duty, ze and RK did a total makeover of the turtle tank yesterday. Cleaned it, RK got a new filter which I owe him for now, and borrowed an electric pump to get the water out, and they cleaned out the sludge. My thanks are boundless and deep, and I owe them much.

But anyway, after I called zer, I attempted to Team the FWiB from my phone, which, using the Amtrak WiFi, was less than perfect. But it was nice anyway.

Then I napped for awhile, and nothing much of interest happened til Albany, where we had a layover, of over an hour while they added another train to ours, from Montreal. That took longer than it was supposed to.

Anyway, that resulted in us getting to NYC later than scheduled. Here I should explain that, since RK has my keys, I can't go directly home. Of course I have my door key, the copy that I made for my Ohio trip, but the fob to get in the building, I don't have. And at the time I was getting in, I wasn't going to rely on luck that someone would be entering as I was. And I hate the "ring random bells til someone buzzes you in" trick. So the plan was for me to come to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's and stay the night, and go home tomorrow, when RK would have given zer my keys to give me.

With all my luggage I wasn't thrilled with the idea of taking the subway here and walking from the subway stop. So I figured I'd take the Long Island Rail Road from the Train Hall, to Forest Hills or Kew Gardens and an Uber from there.

Which is what I did. I looked up the two stops and it said Forest Hills station was accessible, with ramps. Spoiler alert... they lied. But I thought that there were ramps, and the Ronkonkama line goes to Forest Hills, so that's what I decided on.

I was planning on eating in the station before I left. Everything except the bar was closed when I got in. So, no food. Oh well. I got on the 11:17 train.

I got on at the rear of the train, and i walked up to the second to last car, and got settled in. Then, just before they pulled out they announced that only the first six cars would open at Forest Hills (because it's a short platform). I was in car 9.

I had to make my way up three cars, and I wasn't going to exit the train to do it. I barely fit down the aisle. Bumping and banging and dragging my suitcase, my backpack and laptop bag catching on the seats, I struggled up the cars. The train started moving. I had to get between the cars of a moving train. Not like the Amtrak trains, where you're permitted and expected to move between cars and there's safeguards. No. In the LIRR you are NOT supposed to do that, and I did it anyway, twice. One of the more dangerous things I've ever done.

Finally I made it to car 6 and sort of collapsed in a seat. They never got around to collecting my ticket, so that was a wasted $4.50. We got to Forest Hills and I got out, and looked for the promised ramps. If there are ramps, I did not find them.

So I started struggling down the stairs. Avery nice gentleman offered to help and I let him carry the suitcase down, so that was good.

From there on it was easy going. I ordered an Uber, and went to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's apartment. But here I should explain that ze is not here. Ze is staying with a friend of hers who just had her gallbladder out, to help out. So I'm staying here alone, Which is a bummer. But understandable.

So anyway, here I am, I hooked up my laptop, had a few handfuls of zer plantain chips, and am getting ready to go to bed.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Safely here.

3. All the people who helped with my luggage.

4. RK and [personal profile] mashfanficchick

5. I have spare meds here so don't have to unpack my suitcase fir meds.

Austin Maestro van, Kidderminster, 9th August 2025
190/365: Austin Maestro van, Kidderminster SVR station
Click for a larger, sharper image

I was off to see friends in Worcester again today, but at Kidderminster station I noticed that the SVR was having one of its occasional classic vehicle days. Although there were some much older cars than this on display -- I think the oldest was mid-1930s -- this is the one that caught my eye. An Austin Maestro City 500 van, of which there are only something like 15 left on the road. Indeed, there are fewer than 100 Maestros of any kind still running, remarkable when you consider that hundreds of thousands were made during the 1980s. Sadly the Austin Rover company had awful quality control at the time, and most have simply rusted away. The few that remain are mostly show cars like this one -- the reason I haven't obscured the number plate. You can also see a Morris Minor behind, but those are much more common today.

To never come back

Not really in a good place mentally, sometimes feeling I'm just one more bad day away from doing something that I'll surely regret.

I've been in a show, a super cool one. I've met some new indie bands and got to see some of my favourites. It was cool. However I think it highlighted how much of a social outcast I am. Ever since that, I've been struggling with socialization (I always did), and it's trully pushing me down into a hole thinking about that.

I'm tired, now very sick too, and overwhelmed as hell. I'm trying my best but I'm just so tired, so, so tired.

I'm sorry there's nothing smart, quirky or fun to say. I wish I could keep my online persona going for a bit longer.

To try and not be so negative, I can say that I've really enjoyed the time I got to spend with other people. The smallest conversations are bringing me genuine joy, even if they make me feel awful sometimes. There's much about me I'd wish to change right now, but if I can't do that, then I guess I'll have to just suck it up sometime soon.

Not now, though. For now, opening my eyes hurt. My throat is sore, my nose is running and I feel weak.

Perhaps that is a problem for another time, another me.

Then I'll just leave it at that and, say my goodbyes to the me that's this sad piece of nothing.

When you next hear of me, I hope I'll already be someone different.

I got up at 10 for a change, and had breakfast and coffee, then showered and washed my hair, and dressed.

I called Airport taxi and arranged for them to pick me up at 11:00 tomorrow. I'll get up at 8:00 and finish getting ready. Then I went upstairs and packed my suitcase as well as I could. I still have to put the stuff I'm wearing, and my meds and toiletries in it.

I didn't do much else for awhile. Then eventually Linda came by and said she and Sue were going to the beach, so I got on my bathing suit which I hadn't packed yet because I figured we might be doiing the beach today, and met Linda at the stairs. WE made our way down, and were shortly joined by Sue and Otis, her dog.

Didn't do any floating. We sat and talked and watched the waves, and threw sticks for Otis, and eventually I did wade in above my knees, just to say I'd been in.

We came back up, and I sat on the porch and called the Kid, who didn't answer, so I texted her. No reply. I called Duane Reade again, ended up on hold again, and gave up.

At 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB. I won't be seeing much of him for the next few days as his sisters are coming to visit him and he'll be busy. We talked for a nice long time despite some technical difficulties.

After we finished I went down to Linda's and sat with her and Alan and Sue and watched episodes of Wednesday, which I had never seen. I like it, I may start watching it.

Then I came back here and had dinner, and popcorn, and did some sweeping and cleaning.

And then I started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Airport taxi remembered me from when I last used them, two years ago.

3. I've been here two weeks.

4. Interesting TV.

5. My cousins.

6. Popcorn.

Click for a larger, sharper image

Not much to report here today. I only went out for one walk, and here's a photo from it. This was in the evening, hence the low sun. It's a field on the edge of Bewdley that's well known locally as it's conserved in a low-tech fashion to encourage wildlife. Those ancient trees are the cherries -- they no longer produce fruit, but they're the last remnants of the orchards that used to cover this area a century ago, before modern suburban development. (Just behind me is a housing estate.) Under the trees is a long-abandoned tractor. Also, we could do with some rain.

Slept til 11:45 again, finally got up and had breakfast and coffee. Was just finishing up when Linda came by and said she was going to Tops and did I want to come. I said yes, but needed to put on clothes cause I was still in my nightgown. She said OK, and I went and got dressed.

She met me at her cottage and we went in, I needed something to drink for the next two days as I finished my Vernor's yesterday. I got a bottle of Brisk iced tea, which I figure should be just about the the right amount. I also got some thing for [personal profile] mashfanficchick, because it was there and I like to get zer something when I come up here, and I'm not saying what it is because ze reads this.

Anyway, we came back and I went back to the cottage and I forget what I did until I thought that I really should transplant those ferns if I was going to.

So I went back to Linda's and borrowed a trowel and dug up the little ferns that Betsy said I could have. I put them by the trillium where hopefully they'll root and be happy.

Then I sat on the porch and was reading. I finished Into the Water, which is a satisfying read, and I started something totally different, The Cats of Tanglewood Forest by Charles de Lint.

I was just starting it when who should appear but my cousin Janet. We sat on the porch and had a very nice visit. When she had to leave, it was just about 6:00ish.

I got a phone call from Duane Reade which as usual I didn't answer but now I wish I had. It was a real person, not an automated message saying it was about my prescriptions and I should call them back.

So I tried. But I was on hold for half an hour, and then I gave up. If they call back I'll answer, and I'll try again tomorrow.

Anyway, by then it was time to Team the FWiB, so I did. We had a nice talk. At 8:30 as usual I called Middle Brother. Nothing much to report on his end, all is well.

After that I decided to check out if there was any sort of sunset, and if anyone was watching it, but there wasn't, and no one was. So I decided to return Linda's trowel.

I went down, and they were just watching the end of something. Sue was there so I asked if I could join them and I did. We sat and talked for awhile, then Sue decided to go home to bed, and Linda said she'd walk the dog with her so I went too, and we walked Sue back to her cottage.

Then Linda and I walked back and I said good night, and had dinner. Then I made popcorn and had that, and then I read for awhile.

And now I'm starting here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Got stuff at Tops.

3. My cousins.

4. Saw Janet.

5. Transplanted the ferns.

6. Middle Brother is doing well.

I had to be in Worcester today for reasons that aren't interesting and took up quite a bit of the day without being especially enjoyable. Ah well, at least it didn't rain! Today's 365 photo is a classic scene that, like yesterday's pic, I've posted before but not as part of this project. It's the view down the River Severn from the main bridge in Worcester city centre. You can see the Cathedral in the distance and the "Glover's Needle" (a spire that's lost its church) to the left.

Lunch out and D&D

[personal profile] silver_chipmunk
Got up late, at 11:30. Had breakfast and coffee, showered and dressed. Was catching up on the computer when Betsy came over and suggested we go down to the beach for rocks to make a line around the trillium patch in the back yard so it doesn't get mowed over.

So we went to the beach with kids pails and each got about half a pail of rocks. Then we came back up, pulled some weeds out, and put a half circle of the rocks protectively around the trillium.

When we finished, I mentioned that I would like to transplant some ferns to our yard, we used to have beautiful lush beds of them but they have all died out. So we were looking over ferns when Linda came by and asked if we felt like going out to lunch.

We did, so the three of us and Alan (Sue was gong in to Caledonia to have dinner with one of her sons) started searching the net for a near by restaurant that was open at 2:00. We found a place in Olcott that's in the building of the old fire station.

The ambiance was poor... inside seating, and dark, though some of the decor was interesting. The food was quite good though. I had a beef on weck, and battered mushrooms.

Then we came back, and I started reading. I'm still reading Into the Water. It's very atmospheric.

At 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB, and at 8:00 I had my D&D game. We started to battle the boss monster, but after we fought for awhile it became obvious it was an illusion cast from somewhere else. We found the real monster and will start battling it for real next week.

After we finished, I had dinner, and finished the last small bit of mead. Then I started here, and when I finish will probably read some more.

I am considering bringing the hummingbird feeder in for the night so that whatever has been stealing the nectar is thwarted. I'll think about it, the problem would be storing a full feeder upright inside.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My cousins.

3. My D&D group.

4. Good books.

5. The trillium is protected now.

6. Going to transplant some ferns.

I had a fairly busy day today, but it wasn't an especially interesting one. There was one highlight: the woman who served me in Waterstones recognised the line of cutie marks on my T-shirt! Not often you find another MLP fan in the wild in the UK. Otherwise it was mostly drudgery. This photo is of a subject I'm pretty sure I've posted here before, but it wasn't part of 365 then so I'm saying it's ripe for a repeat! It's the twin graves, in the churchyard of St John's, Bromsgrove, of Thomas Scaife and Joseph Rutherford. These men worked on the early railways and died in 1840 when the engine's boiler exploded -- a sadly common occurrence before later improvements in workmanship and safety standards.

I got up late, around 11:30, and had breakfast and coffee, then showered and dressed.

Then I read for most of the day. I finished The Bards of Bone Plain, and I have started Into the Water, by Paula Hawkins.

I took a few walks, one with Betsy during which we had a nice conversation with Gretchen.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick called, and we talked awhile

Then Betsy asked me if I wanted to watch a documentary on the Great Lakes fish with her and Piet and Alan, but it was just before I was to Team the FWiB, and I had my Al-anon meeting at 8:00 so I regretfully said no.

I Teamed the FWiB, until 8:00 and then had the Al-anon meeting. It was very nice.

Then I walked over to Linda's where Betsy was talking with her and Alan about the Outing Park Board meeting Linda was at tonight. We stayed til about 10:30 and then lleft, and I came back and had dinner, and a glass of my mead.

After I finish here I'll probably read on the couch for awhile, then go to bed.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. RK, who is setting up a new filter, at my expense of course, for the turtle tank.

This isn't something you see every day any more, although it was once extremely common. It's a Ford Sierra! Younger readers may not remember these, and Americans may not recognise them, but they were once absolutely everywhere in Europe – they sold almost 1.3 million units in the UK alone during their 11-year production run. This one dates from 1993, the final year of production. It's in the Ghia spec, the highest trim level -- although you can barely see it on the photo, it has miniature wipers for each headlight in the way some Volvos used to. Although this car is over 30 years old now and very much considered a classic, it looked as if it was used regularly, something I was very happy to see.

2. i think youtube is the reason this kid narrates and reacts to everything she does while playing games.... damned streamers... i dont know how common it is since this is the only kid i watch that's old enough to play video games. it's irking me bad but i know it's normal to her 💔 telling her to be quiet would probably be like telling her to stop her heart from beating 💔💔

Which was delivered just fine, and again early.

I got up at 10:45ish, and had breakfast and coffee. Then I ordered the Instacart. Then I showered and dressed, and the order arrived while I was finishing dressing! So I am impressed.

Also, the present [Unknown site tag] ordered for me arrived, a t shirt with "Lakeside Reading club" on it. It's lovely and I shall wear it tomorrow.

Watched the hummingbirds feed and buzz around for the afternoon. I love the hummingbirds.

Then Linda told me everyone was going down to the lake so I got on my swimsuit and went down. Met Betsy there, and then Linda and Sue came. We sat on the beach and talked for awhile, and then they went Kayaking and I borrowed Betsy's inner tube and floated around while they were gone.

Sue came later, but then we really got going, and we finished by 10:30.
