Following two days at sea, the next step of the voyage was the Falkland Islands. This collection of islands comprises over 12,000km^2 (by comparison, Melbourne is approximately 2,500 km²) with a total population of about 3,500 (by comparison, Melbourne has approximately 5,300,000), nearly all of which reside in the settlement of Stanley. On a per capita basis, the islanders are quite well off, and to describe them as "quite British and a bit conservative" would be something of an understatement. Despite the small population, it does have an excellent museum. With few people and a rugged territory, wildlife is abundant, especially in the form of birds and sea mammals, and is quite notable. Penguins are, of course, a primary attraction, and a visit to nearby Yorke Bay provided the opportunity to encounter King, Gentoo penguins, and Magallanic penguins. The only land mammal that existed on the Falklands, the Falkland Islands wolf or warrah was hunted and poisoned to extinction by shepherds in the 19th century.

No discussion of the Falklands (or Islas Malvinas) can occur without discussion of ownership, especially in the wake of the 1982 war. To put the situation in a nutshell, the islands remained uninhabited until the French established a colony in 1764. The following year, the British established a settlement, but it is questionable whether they were aware of one another. The following year, the French surrendered their claim to Spain. A few years later, the British withdrew from the islands, and by the time of the Napoleonic Wars, the Spanish abandoned their colony and garrison, leaving behind gauchos and fishermen. Later, a German-born Frenchman of Argentine citizenship established an Argentine colony, but the United States turned up with a warship in 1831 and dissolved that government. The following year, the British returned and reasserted their rule. The British have remained ever since, and the Argentinians continue to vigorously assert their claims. At the time of the war, I recall a young girl phoning talk-back radio and saying: "There are two big islands - why don't they have one each?" Such a sharing arrangement, as charming and persuasive as it might be, is challenged by the assertion of right through violence.

Leaving the Falklands meant another two days at sea before landing at Montevideo. This is an opportunity to describe the exceptional culinary experience offered by the cruise. Every day, with breakfast merging into lunch and then dinner, there is a plentiful and diverse buffet of excellent quality, which varies in theme each day (the Christmas Day French lunch was quite an experience). For those who prefer a serviced dinner, several restaurants are also available onboard. If you pay a little extra, you can access even more restaurants of an even higher standard. Coupled with the grand hotel breakfasts of the pre-cruise weeks, I am quite prepared to say that I have never eaten so well for such an extended period of time, and, despite a wonderful gymnasium that overlooks the bow of the ship, I rather suspect I have put on more than a few kilos in the past month. Still, as a once-in-a-lifetime voyage (of which I have at least one or two per year) I have very few regrets with experiencing this culinary indulgence.

I have caught up on my circle, but barely commented. Still digesting national news (rage) and unofficial anecdata via work (grief concerning mortality in children and this "cold" that seems to be nationwide).

That said, I will leave the comments open to anyone who wants to prompt me for a drabble in a fandom I know or for original concepts. I will, however, screen them.

Format something like "Fandom/Character(s)/Simple Prompt" or "Original Genre/Character Archetype(s)/Simple Prompt". Include your name on AO3, SquidgeWorld, Ad Astra, or CFFA if it is fannish and you want it gifted.

We Will Persevere.

Name: Chi or Chihiro

Age: eh

I mostly post about: My own thoughts. Tumblr interactivity felt hollow so I cam e here.

My hobbies are: making up AUs and drawing digital art on crack ships when I have the motivation. My current hyperfixation is Aqua from Kingdom Hearts and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7

My fandoms are: currently just the AU I've created for Kingdom Hearts. Didn't like the ending of the third instalment so now it's just a Keyblade Guild living in peace with Aqua x Sephiroth as my main focus.

I'm looking to meet people who: wanna chat about any similar fandom interests with me. Happy to talk about Kingdom Hearts, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Zootopia, ATLA and LOK (no LOK haters please), anything nostalgic from the early 2000s, really

My posting schedule tends to be: sporadic

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: no NSFW stuff

Before adding me, you should know: Due to religious reasons, I do not celebrate or participate in anything to do with Easter, X-Mas, Halloween or Thanksgiving

[personal profile] brickhousewench tipped me to Heading Prints, a company that makes scarves using book art as inspiration. They offer bandanas, skinny scarves, large rectangular scarves, square silky scarves, and also a few rings with designs to match some of their most popular scarf designs.  Also, these are much more affordable on average than most fashion scarves I've seen, although they do cost more than the cheap random ones in a discount store.

If you've seen my post "How to Simplify Fashion," then consider these scarves as an option for color-matching.  Look for a scarf whose colors you love and want to use.  Wear it while clothes shopping to test if new clothes match your colors.

The myNoise site has been getting a LOT of use from me since I found out about it a few months ago! It has a wealth of different ambience presets, but you also have the option of creating your own based on your own needs! I mostly use it a lot for both writing and creating ambience while I'm reading, but recently I've also found it nice for creating rain sounds while I'm trying to clear my head after a long day. Figured this was a site that not a lot of folks knew about and just wanted to share!

Huge thanks to my amazing wife for letting me crash after supper tonight. Last night with our little one was nonstop, and I held the fort but didn’t sleep a minute. That short nap felt like a full reset. Grateful for a partner who sees when I’m running on fumes.

Ivan's dad is a criminal?!

Gabriel left a letter for Adrien telling him the truth and saying he needed to take over and bring back his mom and him......

Aw, Rose kissed Juleka. ❤️️

Luka is even cuter in the new style, not as mature looking.

'Juleka' has a great voice! Now I want to hear the non-acoustic version.

Aww, the group hug. But it's hard to believe Ivan's dad will really change...

I understand how complicated the situation is and how it would hurt Adrien, but at this point Marinette is keeping too much from him and it WILL come out in the worst possible way. :/ You either decide to tell them everything from the start no matter what or you just keep hiding things while being controlled by his and your emotions and never tell him until it's too late.

Perfect World Project!? Nathalie's father?!

6x08: The Ruler

For the record I'm definitely watching these out of order, shit's confusing man. :| Someday I'll try to do a rewatch where they're as chronological as I can get them.

LEAVE NATHANIEL ALONE >_< The knights are clearly meant to be Marc and Nathaniel but his dad wants them to fight over the female villain! At least Marc's family understood and were so supportive.
The hug after Marc runs back to show he doesn't want to change the script after all.

WTF I want to read Marc and Nathaniel's story for real!

LMAO at Adrien sniffing his shirt after Marinette said something smells like old cheese in a sock.

Marc crying, baby. T____T

It wasn't just about Nathaniel drawing comics, it was about the intimacy between the two in the comics and Marc's influence on Nathaniel in 'that way' that Nath's parents are against.

Monarch: "Do you wish to set things straight again? Being able to convert your son to match your vision of the world along with anyone who'd try to steer him in the wrong direction."

Kinda amazing how my feelings have changed on Nathaniel so much. He's still not the strongest mentally, which is understandable knowing his parents now, but he consistently keeps trying.

The way the characters acted when controlled by The Ruler. 🤣

You know, I really thought Marinette was going to ruin things by sneezing on Marc and Nath's work, that's how used to her actions I'm getting. OTL

Also low-key thought Chat Noir should've noticed Lady Bug was sick so that when she changed back and saw Marinette sick he would've wondered.

Honestly starting to feel like this is Persona 5 where Ladybug can change people's hearts, only there's no treasure to steal, they just, well, miraculously change their minds after being akumatized. 🤷

I laughed out loud when Marinette's sneeze blew Adrien across the balcony. His haiiir. 😂

Marc holding Nath's haaand!!! 🌈

Challenge 3: Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

If we keep it short and sweet then my “love letter to fandom” would just be me singing the song “Would You Fall in Love with Me Again” from the Epic the Musical soundtrack at the top of a mountain to proclaim my love to Mozus Trein b/c it’s what he deserves. 😤

That aside, despite all of the flaws and faults of the Twisted Wonderland and FFXIV fandoms, I’m happy I found em. Through those games I found some of my closest friends, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. ❤️

I also ran across H.R. 1936 (No Invading Allies Act) that was introduced by Seth Magaziner (D-RI) in March, and it sounds like it might be useful to contact Reps about: https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1936

(the summary isn't up for some reason, but the full title is 'To prohibit funds for the Armed Forces to engage in operations to invade or seize territory from Canada, the Republic of Panama, or the self-governing territory of Greenland.')

In the Humanities 110 alumni bookgroup, we have moved on from the Fertile Crescent and the Mediterranean, to Mesoamerica! Woo-hoo! I have been waiting for this for AGES.

We got off to a slow start: most of our readings were pretty minimal, and many of us (including me) got frustrated and started doing a bunch of extra reading, just to get a better grounding in the time of place. Consequently, I lagged on doing monthly posts: in a lot of cases, I didn't have much to say until I'd finished my supplementary reading. So here, have it all at once!

Assigned plus supplemental readings from September through December, minus one book I'm still working my way through. Pre-Conquest (i.e., pre-1521) through 1649.

Camilla Townsend, Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs (2019)

What it says on the tin! Episodic history of the Mexica from their coming to the Valley of Mexico through the first century after the Spanish conquest, drawing primarily on Nahuatl-language sources. Each chapter begins with a fictionalized epigram of a key moment in a historical figure's life, then spends the chapter itself expanding on the historical context. Very much intended to be a Mexica-pov history, Townsend's primary sources are Nahuatl annals, the most useful of which are discussed in an appendix. She is careful to point out where the annals are ambiguous or contradictory, or what aspects of a narrative rely on inference, or are found only in Spanish-language sources, or are just plain conjecture, which I appreciate.

I found this a good read, and a satisfying introduction to Mexica culture and history.

Frances F. Berdan and Patricia Rieff Anawalt (eds.), Codex Mendoza (1541/1992)

On its own, this was relatively dry: neither the original glyphic writing nor the Spanish nor English translations were that compelling. (Although it is cool to see how significant items such as shells, rubber balls, and feathers were as tribute.) But when taken with this next work...

Gordon Whittaker, Deciphering Aztec Hieroglyphs: A Guide to Nahuatl Writing (2021)

Not assigned for the course/bookclub, but I very much wish it had been. One of the lectures on the Codex Mendoza invited us to try to interpret its heiroglyphs on our own, without any instruction. When in fact it is more than a rebus writing system! There are many non-literal conventions! Some glyphs are used phonetically, not literally! Some glyphs have multiple meanings! Glyphs have multiple forms and the different forms mean different things! AGH.

Thorough introduction to Mexican glyphic writing. )

Great book, hugely recommended, sometimes a bit more technical than I could quite grasp, it helps if you already speak some Nahuatl (but Whittaker teaches you most of the Nahuatl you need to know to follow the text), and lots and lots and lots of glossy full color illustrations and scans or photographs of various codices and carvings.

James Lockhart (ed. and trans.), We People Here: Nahuatl Accounts of the Conquest of Mexico (late 1500s / 1993)

Translation of several Nahuatl-language texts about the Spanish conquest of Mexico. The vast majority of the page count is devoted Book Twelve of the Florentine Codex (La Historia General de las Cosas de Nueva España -- in English, The General History of the Things of New Spain), an encyclopedia compiled by Bernardino de Sahagún during the latter half of the sixteenth century. La Historia General was conceived to fill two primary purposes: to be a primary source for an eventual Nahuatl dictionary, and to be an encyclopedia to Mexica culture, to better aid the twin projects of colonization and conversion. In the Florentine Codex, La Historia consists of two parallel texts presented on facing pages, the original Nahuatl and a Spanish translation created by Sahagún, plus additional illustrations (which for the most part are European-style illustrations, and not the heiroglyphic texts of earlier Mexica codices). Books 1 through 11 are an encyclopedia of various cultural and natural history topics; Book 12 is a narrative of the Spanish conquest. In We People Here, Lockhart provides side-by-side English translations of both the Nahuatl and Sahagún's Spanish translation -- which is fascinating.

Nahuatl and Spanish )

Luis Lasso de la Vega (eds. Lisa Sousa, Stafford Poole and James Lockhart), The story of Guadalupe (1649/1998)

Earliest written account of the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe, set to pen nearly a century after the first written reference to the famous artifact. There's a lot of fascinating context about who wrote it (a white Spaniard) and in what language (Nahuatl) and for what purposes (to persuade the Mexica to be more Catholic about their worship at a holy site for the Mexica goddess Tonantzin; to convince the Iberian Spanish elite that the New-Spain Spanish elite were as legitimate as the Iberians and/or should be the new center of the Spanish empire).

Almost none of that context is actually in the story (except its being written in Nahuatl, which is made much of at the beginning). Instead, this is the story of Juan Diego, lowly and humble, and the visions that appeared to him, and his attempts to make the Bishop listen. There's some interesting symbolism about Spanish birds and flowers appearing miraculously, but the event we liked best is the part where Juan Diego decided he didn't have time to be harassed by Mary and tried to ghost her, and she called him on it. (And then, very graciously, solved his other problems so that he could return to working on hers.)

Today is partly cloudy and cool.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/7/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 1/7/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 1/7/26 -- I gathered the raked leaves from the ritual meadow, enough to fill the trolley twice, which I dumped on the daffodil bed. (That should have been done in fall, but better late than never.) One quarter around the firepit equaled two trolleys and covered the daffodil bed completely. The tulip bed will need at least twice that much.

I startled several cardinals and the great-horned owl in the ritual meadow.

EDIT 1/7/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I filled a trolley with sticks from the brushpile beside the driveway, then dumped that in the firepit.

EDIT 1/7/26 -- I filled another trolley with sticks, then dumped that in the firepit.

There's not much left of the brushpile now, mostly pieces too big for me to break down.

It's 5:05 PM. The western sky is still twilight, the east considerably darker.

I am done for the night.

Episode 9: I don't understand why it has to be Jay to make the wish, they have a whole team now to carry out the wish??

Lmao everyone was excited to strike Jay with the sword. Understandable. Then they all had way too much fun using gardening tools to beat up the bad guys, especially Lloyd #2 with that rake. 😂😂😂

That was tense!

Episode 10: *smh* If the bride-to-be doesn't clearly say YES the effect should not take.

That wish for Delara to return was more like 'I wish my love's soul went into this girl', I don't get how it worked when the wish was so loose.

Do only Nya and Jay remember?? I don't particularly care about them as a couple.

I wonder what happened to everyone else since the future was erased? My hope would be that they all remember and take heed.

That was a good season, a lot happened. I'm super curious what the next one will be about!
