I'm trying to get back into this, so have some random Donna and baby! Ten.

Setting a timer for 10 minutes...

Donna held the wiggling baby , bouncing him up and down. She felt like she'd been doing this for ia century and the Doctor wouldn't calm down for nap time.

" Still got a gob," she muttered over his cries. " Guess some things don't change, Spaceman.  Or Space-baby?"

Rubbing his back,  she wondered if this was just going to be her life now. She remembered some of the stories her mates who were mums told her, and a few her mum had recounted from Donna's own toddler hood.  How did they survive?

" You are pretty cute like this" she admitted, tousling the Doctor's wisps of soft hair before being greeted with  a hiccup and a spit-up of milk and whatever else on her shoulder.

Donna glowered.  " Lovely. Right, let's  just try and get you to sleep, yeah?"

The baby Doctor hiccuped again.

"Taking that as a yes."

With a cloth on her shoulder, Donna carefully placed the Doctor in a crib the TARDIS had provided. It was nice; a sort of old-fashioned one with a miniature solar system.  She made a mental note to ask him eventually why he even had that.

" Stories" Donna said, running a finger across a small shelf of picture books. She didn't recognize most of them, and several had some word circular writing on the spines. Until something caught her eye.

" Well, least you've got the classics."  She opened and started to read a dog-eared copy of Peter Rabbit.

(A/N:  This was kind of fun! :P)

Willow Cuttings

My willow cuttings have arrived! :D I will need to unpack them and set them up. My plan is to put some in water, which makes willow water, which can be used to root other things. I shall take cuttings from some dogwoods and other things here to see if this works. I also intend to put some willow cuttings in soil to see how that works. Since willows are pretty much the easiest thing to propagate from cuttings, and I have 3 of each color, I figure at least one of each should survive.

Willow is a keystone plant, supporting many other species. Early blooms feed bees. Birds like to nest in willows. Many species of insects, especially butterfly and moth larvae, feed on them. They also make great craft materials and, as mentioned above, spew out rooting hormones.

Sorry. The days have just been flying by for me. No excuses to make. But here's today's challenge.

Create a character in your mind (or use one you've already created) that has at least this much backstory and personality figured out:

* In general, are they optimistic/glass-half-full or pessimistic/glass-half-empty?
* In general, do they have enough money/income to do whatever they might want (within reason) or are they struggling to make ends meet?
* They have a skill learned while they were young or in school that they're passable at but not great at and that they haven't done in at least ten years, such as drawing, playing a musical instrument, playing a sport, dancing, or doing a hobby.

Now, write a couple of paragraphs of them responding to someone inviting them to do that skill again (like joining a community band, dancing at a party, or check out a knitting club). Be sure that they respond in a way that makes sense for their outlook and situation.

Today is cloudy, cold, and damp. Last night it snowed a bit, then sleeted, and seems to have rained later. Now most of the ice has melted off.

I fed the birds. I've seen a flock of sparrows and a male cardinal.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/2/26 -- I transplanted snowdrops from the parking lot to the white garden.

EDIT 3/2/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I set up a label with the new Sharpie Oil Paint Pen (Extra Fine) and took pictures.

I saw a squirrel in the trees.

EDIT 3/2/26 -- My red curly willow cuttings arrived, as did my order from John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds. I have set up two of the willow cuttings in water, one in potting soil. I also took a cutting from the fishpond mulberry tree and one from a red dogwood, which I added to the water cups to see if the willows will help those root too.

EDIT 3/2/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 3/2/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen a male cardinal chasing a female, and a fox squirrel at the hopper feeder.

I am done for the night.

Greenland ('20): It's weird that I had not heard/seen this before but ah well. There were a couple of extremely tense moments. I feel like there was a lack of urgency in some scenes from background characters. Not the most original movie but I will definitely watch the second one to see what happens to them down the line. 3/5 stars

10.0 Earthquake ('14): Ah, I've seen this. I'm getting tired of family drama disaster movies. And the daughter with a gross love interest/friend. It had a few good points though. 2/5

Night of the Reaper ('25): The twist did manage to surprise me a little, probably because I'm not one to try to figure things out on my own, but it made sense, although the killer reveal should've been a flashback when she said 'I followed you after the funeral'. Would watch again. 4/5?

The Invitation ('15): Guy and his girlfriend along with their old friends are invited to the house he used to live in with his wife and kid until he died in an accident and she cheated on the guy with someone at her grief meetings. Come to find out, the ex-wife and her new boyfriend are in a cult together and acting strange. Turns out they almost poisoned them all to death. Not sure if it was going to be a murder/suicide or if they were just going for the friends. I ended up skimming after a certain point.

Aquamarine ('06): I've seen this movie on lists with stuff like She's the Man etc as ~cultural relics~ so i figured I should watch it lol, Two absolutely boy crazy girls encounter a mermaid who has to prove love exists to her father or be forced into an arranged marriage. They teach her through magazines like Cosmopolitan how to attract one guy in particular. Contains bad acting at times and plenty of cringe situations. 😂 I like the thing with Bonnie and Leonard. It has the whole 'true love can be platonic' thing like Frozen. You know what, I did enjoy this , can't resist 'friendship is love', 'people aren't always what you expect' not to mention 'parents are people too'. => I only sorta knew one song. I feel like I would rewatch it. 4/5 stars

Coherence ('13): I know you're supposed to be confused but I prefer a more clean-cut ending. 2/5 stars

Quest for Camelot
('98) (rewatch) - Man, why wasn't that Ruber cut off the second he started being nasty. The music lyrics for the Camelot song were so straightforward. XD I don't understand what killed Lionel, was it the fall itself? Does the horn sounding only mean 'Excalibur has been stolen'? What do they do if Camelot is being attacked? Turns out I remembered "I Stand Alone" really well! There are plenty of references in this movie including Star Wars. Overall had a great time, I look forward to rewatching more animated movies!

carbolic

carbolic (kahr-BOL-ik) - n., a caustic white crystalline compound, C6H5OH, derived from benzene and used in resins, plastics, and pharmaceuticals and in dilute form as a disinfectant and antiseptic, now more commonly called phenol.

And as a short form for carbolic soap, a mildly antiseptic soap containing it, which was the first commercially available disinfectant soap. The name was coined in 1834 in German as Carbolsäure (modern German Karbolsäure), carbolic acid by the chemist, Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, who first derived it, from coal tar -- thus the carbon connection.

In the controversy surrounding Cory Doctorow’s anniversary post, many people have engaged with the spirit of the thing, but I have yet to see any in-depth discussion of his choice to invoke the term purity culture. Purity culture is a term with very particular origins, and it’s not some general term for people being mean on the internet. It’s a term for a specific enculturation into a pattern of sexual abuse.

But before we get into that, let me give you an overview of why we’re talking about this again. I say “again” because — as long-time readers may recall — I posted about this subject before back in 2019. With that said, that post was written for a different audience, and there are some new facets to address this time, so let’s take it from the top.

do you remember your dreams?

I used to have very vivid, memorable dreams all through my early 30s-- I'd wake up the next morning and have tons to write about in my dream journal. And then some time in the last 5 years I stopped being able to remember my dreams except MAYBE once a month, and even then it's not as detailed as it used to be.

I'm assuming there's a correlation between starting to travel full-time and having other things to focus on than my own internal life, but maybe also there's some aging thing happening? As my brain changes, so too do my dreams? Not sure.

Sooooo, since I can make polls and I'm nosy AF, here's one for y'all to answer:

"The Struggle Against Overwhelming Odds" belongs to Not Quite Kansas and needs $34.50 to be complete. Raymond and Gideon get attacked on the way home from research.

The weather has been warmish here, though it got colder today. Yesterday it rained a bit. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a large flock of sparrows, several starlings, a pair of house finches courting plus an extra male, two male cardinals, a mourning dove, and a fox squirrel. I saw a downy woodpecker in the trees. Red-winged blackbirds have been singing overhead. Honeybees are out, and finally found the flowers. Currently blooming: crocuses, snowdrops.

Very specific Britlit question

Earlier tonight, my neighbor and I sat down to watch Sense and Sensibility (1995) with Alan Rickman brooding magnificently across the screen, interspersed with lush garden shots.

I took an Austen seminar in college and read all the novels during that time, but something about seeing Marianne Dashwood onscreen made me reevaluate the extent to which her trait "it always rains when I step outside alone" is inherently comedic. It reminded me of the podcast Wooden Overcoats. It's always raining when WO protagonist Rudyard Funn steps outside, while antagonist Eric Chapman happily babbles about how sunny and nice the weather's been lately.

I've read a good deal of British literature, but these two data points have left me with a question I can't answer from my experience alone. Is it a thing for comedic characters to suffer under perpetual rain? And if so, what other examples have you read or seen?

In typing this post, I've remembered the Hitchhiker's Guide character who discovers that rain follows him wherever he goes because he's a minor storm god and the clouds love him. So there's a third case.

Donating clothes to charity has an unfortunate dark side

Here’s what actually happens when you donate clothes. First, they go to charity shops and collectors who sort through everything. The nicest pieces might be sold at the local thrift store.

But there’s a catch: these organizations receive far more clothing than they can sell. We’re talking about mountains of fabric that no one locally wants to buy.

So what happens to the rest? Some items are thrown away. But a huge portion gets packed into bales and shipped overseas.

There are lots of ways to address this issue. First, understand the problem...
